Torque / HP Curves vs RPM

I dropped into the local MB dealership last week. On the way out I noticed there was a pile of 2001 (R129) SL-Class glossey 21 page MB sales brochures on the reception desk.

They had found them in the back room when cleaning up.

Who want's these any more except me? I grabbed six of them.

A lucky find. Who cares?

Me! I bought about my first MB used 1 1/2 years ago. No sales brochures. Just as the R230 was arriving. Before I even started to follow or had become aware of the performance of the R129 SL 500.

One interesting part of this is that page 19 shows the Torque and Horse Power vs RPM graphs.

Torque (I had read elswhere) begins it's peak at 2,500 rpm and is flat till 4,500 rpm. Then drops off till 6,000 rpm.

Is that why I sence better acceleration sometimes when giving 3/4 gas than when matting the accelerator to reach 6,000 rpm before the automatic shift points?

Horse power is a steady upward graph till it peaks at 5,500 rpm then drops off.

Who can explain the relationship of horse power and torque to acceleration. On the flat flat vs uphill? I just love smoking cars on uphill stretches.
