Just an fyi - in Ohio diesel fuel is not more expensive than premium, in fact usually it is less or on par with premium. The other day it was only 10 cents more than regular.

Diesel and gas are both nice in the GL's. We prefer diesel for mpg (since we do a lot of trips and highway travel) and for towing.

Yeah, I can read between the lines

PS: I was NOT talking about fuel, in which diesel is MORE expensive, but I meant the ACTUAL Blue tec fluid fill up that IS required for them.

Sorry gang, but gas mileage was NOT important to me or my wife. A fun driving vehicle was

Enjoy the mileage, as there is NOTHING wrong with that, Just not for me

I guess I should convert the S600 next?

Relax - I was kidding.

This is a "different strokes" issue, of course. For me, "fun driving vehicle" and "3-row SUV" just don't go together.

"Fun driving vehicle" and "911 GT3," well, now we're talkin'!

No issue here, and yes I can understand it my friend. Enjoy the nice ride

We're on the same page. I bought the GL because my daily driver needs to also double as a tow vehicle for the race car, but I still don't want to drive something that sucks.

GL350 Mileage and Towing

As a former owner of (3) Generations of Yukon Denali XL's, I have to say my new Gl350 has put all of them to shame. When looking at vehicles that could carry our 4 kids (under 7) and be able to tow a 21.5' Wakeboard boat, it always seemed my choices were limited to the largest of trucks with 6 liter or greater engines.

I went to MB of Westminster in Colorado last month and drove home my new GL350. While averaging 82MPH on a new engine (16 Miles at start) my son and I had 28.6 Miles per gallon. We filled up once in Iowa on the way to WI and arrived home with over 1/2 tank left. By the way, MB of Westminster is one of the best dealership's I've seen.

On July 4th weekend, I put the GL to the test taking my Centurion ENZO SV216 to Minocqua, WI (1:15 Min Drive each way) In the Denali, the 6.2L engine would scream to 4K sometimes 5K RPM as we'd hit hills, etc that are along our route. The GL never shifted OR broke 2100RPM. It never showed stress, swerved under the weigh of the rear-heavy boat (it has a V-Drive for better wakes on the water)

Now, this is something that we do every weekend in the summer so I can tell you my amazement. The Denali XL 6.2L would get 9.2MPG as an average pulling the boat up and back. The GL350 was 17.6MPG.
After 30,000 miles of the 2008 Denali XL, my Average MPG was 12.8 (total miles divided by Fuel consumed) Right now, we're averaging Mid 25's. When Asked by the GM dealer, why I didn't want to buy out my lease, I had to walk him to the GL, Show him the fit/finish and explain the mileage. I stated that as soon as GM built a product that wasn't based off of NASCAR bred V8's, and maintained their value, I'd consider it. (my Lease buy out was also $10k More than street price-which tells you the GM's DON'T hold value)

In short, if you're ever questioning, can this Haul, have the efficiency, Comfort and power that matches or exceeds that of others. YES. After 8 long months of looking at every vehicle in the class capable of my needs, we've been so impressed with the GL, we've talked about getting a 2nd.

Haha. I get less MPG's than a GL350 hauling a 21.5' Wakeboard boat

I averaged 10.5 mpg commuting in my Escalade ESV and 7.5 mpg towing my race trailer.

For reference, I average about 25 mpg over the same commute in the GL350.

Those with gas in the common sense camp?

Seriously though saying getting the 550 is a waste because it isn't doesn't perform like a sports car is like saying getting the diesel is a waste because it doesn't get as good mileage as a TDI Golf. Get what you like and be happy with it. Like most things in life, each has strengths and weaknesses, and you have to decide what's most important to you.

money wise the diesels are way ahead anyway you look at it. there is a reason why they do not depreciate after all which...only completes the value reasoning.
Have you shopped the used market lately? Yes, diesel depreciation is very low but unless you drove out of the dealer at about $50-55K then I'd hardly call that losing "zero dollars". The west coast market must be good for all of these cars because in the last 9 months and 15K miles I have only lost about 1.5% through depreciation. No doubt the 450 will have higher depreciation than the diesel but I think your 0% vs. 25% is a bit misleading. Just sayin'...

BTW - some of you guys are pretty funny. Thanks for the Monday morning laugh!!

Hey, I'd love to have a 350 instead of a 450 to go with my VW TDI and MB E-CDI but the markup was way to much to overcome the math and the re-schooling of my wife to not buy gasoline. Right now I've saved about 10k$ and the worst my wife can do is put regular in vs. super. I think I did A-ok in my purchase. The GL is super nice but honestly, I still like driving my 2005 E-CDI better. I'll leave the bus driving to my lovely wife.

I clicked on the links, saw the MPG and thought "Dang! Something's wrong with his diesel!" ... then noticed that this is in a 450 and went.. "Wow, that's pretty good!"

I would but the most I've squeezed out of my TDI is 59.8 mpg. Of course I don't have the fancy trip computer in it though.

No, it was a measured tank from San Clemente, CA to El Paso, TX. I am rocking all of 90hp with it so their are trade offs. It will be my daughter's here in 7 years when she turns 16. Everyone should learn how to drive a stick first.

Haha, I did mine in a Camry Hybrid. I managed to bring the average up to 46 during a short 160 mile trip. It was a lot of flat land and some slight hill areas. But I had to go 65 mph the entire time to get that. Added an extra half hour-45 minutes to my drive compared to when I normally drive 80mph (in which case I average about 35mpg).
