W210 1998 E320 FRONT LEFT SPRING FELL OUT!!

I HAD A VERY UNUSUAL INCIDENT OCCURE THE OTHER DAY...... I WAS PULLING INTO MY PARKING PLACE AND WITH NO INDICATION OF ANY THING WRONG WITH THE FRONT END, THE LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING FELL OUT AND THE FRONT END DROPPED. AFTER EXAMINATION AND CAR NOW IN THE SHOP AND UP ON THE RACK, I SEE THAT THE TOP COIL SPRING HOLDER THAT IS WELDED TO THE FRAME HORN WAS SPLIT APART AND LET THE COIL SPRING GO.. WHEN I PURCHASED THE E320 I RAN A CAR FAX REPORT AND IT HAD NO DAMAGE HISTORY AND THERE IS NO RUST ISSUES.

HAS ANY ONE EVER HAD A PROBLEM LIKE THIS? AND ANY GOOD EXPERT IDEAS HOW THE REPAIR SHOULD BE CONDUCTED???

First, press the Caps Lock button. Post in lower case unless you intend to be shouting at every one.

This is a rare but known problem on early W210's. Especially those driven in winter conditions (salty roads). Get your car to a dealership to be repaired under the service campaign for this issue. Have them go over the rest of the car so you know what you have.

Also, this shows the relative uselessness of Carfax as a tool for assessing the condition of a used vehicle. A good MB mechanic doing an pre-purchase inspection would have been aware and spotted this issue.

There is

no recall or service campaign that is going to pay for the repair.
You can buy the upgraded pocket and have it installed properly(riveted)
at a good body shop.
Some have had luck calling mbusa. Some
It is a rust issue. Mercedes is aware of it. They skated clear of a recall because they said nobody was ever killed by the front end falling off
Yet

inspect,inspect,inspect.

replace the other side while in there.
surprised you have been a member for 3 years and that you have not seen this issue before. It happens all the time

Some people have gotten a friendly dealer to chip in but you'll probably have to pay some if not all.

If it were me, I would use the dealer. A little more but more likely done right. And as I said, getting the car looked over is a free-be.

BTW, there was someone on the peachparts site selling a spring perch kit (2?) for a W210 a while back. Bought them and the car was totalled before he installed them. But dealer won't install them even if genuine MB parts.

Sadly, rust has been the Pariah of the W210. The spring perch is probably the most exhilarating example while the trunk lock key hole is a bit more humdrum. As Olord pointed out, having your front end collapse is not considered a safety issue do don't look for much help from MB unless you have a long history with a particular dealer.

OK, Thanks for the advice, sounds like Car Fax sucks on the what people think is reliable info, I am going to try to locate the spring perch's and have them both replaced.

if anyone has a set let me know, I would like to get my MB back on the road as soon as I can.

Do you like the smaller print in this reply???

dealer or peachparts.com

sells them
I just posted link to factory WIS procedure
on
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...t-failure.html

it should be one of the latest posts.
any shop with the proper riveter and know how can do the repair.
car must be aligned after repair.

carfax only shows records and repairs that get reported
never use a clean carfax as belief that someone inspected the car.
You needed to have that done when bought.
the rust starts under the mastic a long time ago.And should have been peeled back inspected and if still good sealed properly
if bad replaced or you walk from the deal.
live and learn

I believed that there was a recall or technical recommendation for those cars to check the spring mountings that were rusting and braking just like happened on your case. Check with your mechanic.

CARFAX never claimed to do mechanical inspections. What are you talking about? You need to get a good mechanic inspect any car you buy, In some states such as MD it is mandatory that you have a comprehensive mechanical inspection to transfer the title. CARFAX is just to check if car was in a previous accident (when reported), flooding , theft, etc.

you're right, speednj....but with the 210, i don't believe any of the coilover
designs are made in coaxial design such as we're used to seeing (like that
used in the 210 4matic). i'm quite sure they may call them coilover, but
they are separates: spring vs shock.

1999 E430
Today is May 31, 2011 and my 1999 E430 spring perch broke while my entire family was riding in it, nothing happened; the flying spring did not killed any passing cyclists or motorists, etc. However, I need to get this fixed, there is no official recall on this, I looked at other older posts, what should I do to fix it? BTW, I love this car, had it for 2 years and hope to keep it around! Thank you! -Mike PS(Thanks for ANY advice)

Re

Have a problem growing roses. The prev spots may not be getting enough sun. We're kind of limited as dont want to have to mow around a ton plants. We took some huge bushes out from the front of our house & could possibly plant it there next spring along w/3 new bushes planted there this fall. The front faces west.
