ML320 Low Range Issues

Hello all, I purchased a '98 ML320 some time ago, the car has run fine, but when I start it up, the 'low range' light blinks 18-20 times. I decided to try and use the low range, putting it in neutral and pressing the button. It blinks 4-5 times, and goes away. When I drove it right after, the car handled oddly, and the engine was revving very high, and the car moving at a slow rate of speed. After stopping it and restarting, it goes back to normal. Is the low range functioning, if not, what do you all think needs to be replaced?

Thanks alot.

Keep in mind that in addition to neutral you must have your foot on the brake to engage the low range. From what you are describing it sounds as if it is not working correctly. The flashing light after start up is not normal.

Well then its broken isn't it?? Could cost as much to fix as your 10 year old car is worth depending on whats wrong. If you purchased it like that you were had.

I only recently noticed it flashing, but what could be the part that has gone bad, and about how much would it cost to replace it? Thanks for replies.

Anyone?

Has anyone had any similar experiences, or, does anyone even know which part(s) is/are associated with the low range? I read about something called the transfer case, what is it and where is it located?

I never had any such experience with either of the 2 W163s I have owned but have heard of a few. The transfer case is located under the vehicle near the transmission. Your problem could be a bad solinoid that will not activate the low range or, worst case the transfer case itself. Unless you have lots of tools and/or a lift and lots of knowledge its not a DIY job. Primary cause of these failures is that owners sometimes never exercise the transfer shift and over the years it freezes up. Least expensive failure is the shifting solinoid and the most expensive is replacement of the transfer case. Best have it diagnosed by an experienced shop, preferably a dealer and then decide what you want to do. With your 98 the repairs could cost more than the value of your ML.
